On the feast of the archangels, we remember St. Francis’ deep devotion to St Michael. Saint Francis of Assisi observed an ‘annual Lent, for the feast of Saint Michael that began with the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) and concluded with the Feast of st Michael Archangel (September 29).
Francis developed a special affection for Mary, and also for the archangel Saint Michael, since the very beginning of his conversion. He looked up to them often, seeking comfort, when things got tough. This in particular was one of his most extreme and lonely retreats, when after having spent 40 days meditating on the Passion of our Lord, Francis received the impression of stigmas, which are the traces of the five wounds that Jesus received in his body.
